Overview
Imagine that terrifying hospital visit with your little one. Children often feel overwhelmed by the intimidating environment upon arrival at the hospital. They see the gigantic hospital, nurse with noisy machines and other restless children. This leads to panic and resistance, causing crowding in the waiting areas and traumatic experiences.

The Challenge
Maintaining the design process and completing the concept were my responsibilities for this project. I was also in charge of the product film and the storytelling, which gave the client a clear picture of the situation. My top priorities were making sure we had a thorough context and including all stakeholders in our process.
The Solution
We have conducted research into and with the user. We did this by conducting interviews with professional experts and children, but also by conducting observations in the hospital and a survey. We went through the design process in 1 week using the design sprint. Here we have developed various concepts using methods such as Lightning demos, Crazy 8s and Solution sketches. To conclude this, we created a storyboard and developed the first prototypes to test with the target group. After the sprint week, our concept consisted of an experience in the waiting room and injection room, where the child can use an app to find distraction in "Olli's world" before the treatment, after which the child can play a game against the parents/guardians or nurse during the treatment. We tested this with the target group, which showed that our concept fits well with the needs of the child. We tested our different prototypes several times during our design process. We conducted these tests with the target group, parents of the target group, nurse and UX people. In this way we have gained insights from many different perspectives to arrive at valid results and to further develop our product.
The Result
We made sure that kids who need blood tests no longer have to be afraid during their hospital stay by combining storytelling with immersive techniques. I noticed that respondents were totally engrossed in the experience, losing sight of the fact that they were going to have their blood drawn, both during testing with the intended audience and at the exhibition. Therefore, this was a huge success. The client also thought it was a very practical idea that could be easily incorporated with current procedures and the nursing staff's existing expertise.
The Transfer
As a person and professional, I have mainly been able to develop in making our concept creation and imagining it. I have always found it less easy to represent ideas or concepts, because I don't consider myself very strong illustrator. This is certainly visible in the storyboards. I feel like I made it work this time. Through video I was able to present our concept in a way that I would normally not be able to do. That is why I give myself an eight as a grade for this period. Designing together with children was quite an experience in itself. I experienced this very positively. What I have learned is that you have to let them play and figure things out, so that the research is without bias. And if that's not good enough, we as a team also won two prizes!
