Case Study
Overview
For some surfers, a nice board is not enough. Building your own board is the dream of every water sports fanatic. But making or even designing a board is a difficult and time-consuming process and not everyone has that luxury. I designed CostumBoards for that group of fanatics. A surfboard shop where you as a customer design the board yourself and the shaper makes it.

The Challenge
My main goal in this project was to investigate the needs of the intended audience. I focused my efforts on the webshop's navigation and element placement. I placed a high priority on clearly communicating to the user the difference between ordering a custom-made board and creating one yourself, so that the target audience could be easily segmented.
The Solution
I mostly concentrated on iterating in small steps during the design process. I started by doing a case study, where I looked into what makes a surfboarding online store engaging, enticing to purchase, and visually appealing for the intended audience. I started sketching and creating mood boards for this. I conducted usability tests on these sketches before starting over. This process went smoothly and I avoided any potential design errors by devoting my time and effort to the mood board, the sketches, and testing them, which produced results fast.
The Result
A compassionate webshop that features an interactive catalog with various products. The webshop is free and organic, which fits well with the target group. As a user, you can put together your own board in the webshop from various pre-sets or complete your own selection form, so that you can design your own board from A to Z. Attention was paid to the knowledge that a user can be a very experienced surfer and will need to put together a board themselves, while less experienced surfers prefer to choose from pre-sets.
The Transfer
For me, learning to prepare to design was crucial in this project. Making a case study, creating a mood board, making sketches, different designs on paper and testing these drawings made designing the webshop very smooth. Learning this, gave me a fresh look at designing a design process and has taught me that good preparation is just as important as being able to design.
